DragonWave’s Horizon DUO

DragonWave has recently introduced the Horizon Duo platform. This platform is the next generation of the DragonWave Native Ethernet Radio portfolio and benefits from the history of innovation delivered in the AirPair and Horizon Compact families.

Horizon Duo delivers industry-leading capacity of an astounding 1.6 Gbps per link that rivals the capacity of fiber-based solutions, taking wireless to new heights. Sharing modem technology of Horizon Compact, the Duo’s dual-modem capabilities enables the doubling of capacity per system. The increased capacity, using the same amount of hardware, results in significantly lower costs per bit as compared to other solutions. Horizon Duo can be operated in either single or dual channel modes and includes the flex bandwidth feature found in all DragonWave solutions. This inherent scalability enables the user to grow the network capacity without any need for re-engineering or site visits. This dramatically reduces the risk required to support new services and reduces the cost of churn in the network.

Horizon provides an elegant and easy path for AirPair customers to upgrade their networks. DragonWave’s Horizon Duo product reuses existing AirPair ODU radio, antenna and cabling. Simply upgrade the IDU to achieve at least 4x network capacity. The upgrade can be done easily and cost-effectively without the need to perform a tower climb. The IDU platform supports integrated link aggregation so that the user only requires a single GbE connection to his network

Operating in both licensed and unlicensed frequencies in the 6-to-38-GHz range, Horizon Duo supports integrated link aggregation, XPIC, 1+1 switching, adaptive modulation and an integrated regenerator configuration. This innovative platform leads the industry in flexibility, capacity and cost efficiency.

Questions About DAS Design?

When an in-building design is being considered, many times the bare minimum solution with single frequency band coverage is offered and implemented.

This approach can be a significant and in the long run an expensive problem for the building owner. The owner will need to add a new costly DAS system for each additional frequency band the owner would want to later implement.

As a solution to this issue, an integrator should also offer the building owner the option to design the DAS to not only include the targeted frequency bands, but to develop the design to cover higher frequency bands, such as PCS.

This can be accomplished by using a good indoor “wide-band” antenna with the DAS that will not only cover the targeted frequency bands but also support future frequency bands on the same DAS. By using this “run-the-cable-once” method, you have a wideband DAS that is truly future-proof.

Initially when you design a system for the highest frequency, the extra 15% cost that is created by the additional coax and antennas can create a future cost avoidance of 300% to 400% of the total cost of the DAS.

The active components can then be integrated and combined onto the system at a later date as future budgeting allows. There is no additional cost to the passive portion of the system.

By offering your customers this choice in your proposal, you may be gaining an edge on your competition on your initial proposal. This would put you in a position to be in a leadership position for future designs.

Public Safety
As many of you are seeing, legislation continues to expand in many U.S. cities and counties that force compliance to public safety frequency band coverage in new buildings.

This legislation creates a tremendous revenue opportunity for wireless value-added resellers and integrators. If this is a business that you would seek to grow, Talley can help. Coaxial Cable Considerations

Are you planning to buy coaxial cable soon? If so, consifer a few things. Coaxial cable is comprised of two conductors sharing the same axis. The inner conductor may be solid or stranded and is suspended, via a dielectric, within the outer conductor or shield.

This type of cable generally carries radio, video or data signals. The signal travels between the outside of the inner conductor and the inside of the shield (outer conductor). This allows the inner material of the center conductor to vary from copper as a means of reducing cable cost. If DC voltage is to be supplied via the coax, for example to power a tower-mounted amplifier (TMA), then it is likely the inner material will need to be copper as well.

Coaxial cable is classified by characteristic impedance measured in ohms, with the primary types being 50 and 75 ohm. Impedance is a ratio calculation of the inner and outer conductor diameters plus a dielectric constant representing a value specific to the dielectric material used in the cable. The center conductor needs to remain, as near as possible, to exact center of the shield within the dielectric. It is critical to match cable impedance to the devices you are connecting.

Selecting a coaxial cable should involve consideration of: operating frequency, power rating (watts@frequency), attenuation at the desired frequency, velocity of propagation (VP), environment the cable operates in and potential issues related to intermodulation. Intermodulation is directly impacted by the quality of shielding utilized within the cable.

Clearing the Air on WiMAX

There are many discussions surrounding the subject of WiMAX. Without a doubt, this new technology provides many things to be excited about. However, in order for you to better understand your WIMAX needs, you must first understand what the WIMAX technology is and what it offers.

Skepticism exists due to noise about product A or product B, having WiMAX capabilities. Noise is already a bad word in the RF world, but more noise has been created on the marketing level too. Product capabilities, not aligned with the standards supported by the WiMAX Forum™, is not only misleading, but irresponsible. This commits everyone’s time to educating the customer, instead of helping to engineer and supply a network solution.

Is WiMAX complex? Yes, but it can be simplified by taking it in smaller steps. First, there are a few acronyms and organizations to get acquainted with: Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) is what many carriers are evolving into, to provide data on networks of the future. Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP) is an ISP that accomplishes providing data via a “Wireless” means. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the professional association for the advancement of technology, they are responsible for standards such as 802.11b (Wi-Fi), 802.3af (PoE) and now the 802.16d standard, for fixed WiMAX products.

Taking a basic approach to WiMAX is not necessarily a bad idea. What it allows is the ability to operate as a WISP, with the benefit of having your frequencies being registered/licensed, allowing for interference-free operation. It is truly a viable solution that operates in a specific frequency range (3.65GHz in USA), with specific power outputs, that still require Line-of-Sight (LOS).

What it doesn’t allow for is a careless mentality of grabbing a handful of license-free product(s) and just slapping it up on a tower, expecting high-quality results, as was witnessed about 3+ years ago with 802.11a/b/g products. While good results have been achieved in a variety of markets with unlicensed products, ultimately, it can be a matter of time before interference rears its ugly head on you.

WiMAX is a viable solution for providing data services, but it will take a bit of research and engineering to provide a successful rollout. Larger tier wireless carriers and local exchange carriers (LEC’s) may all be competing for the same spectrum. But, one thing is for sure, it will need the FCC’s blessing and coordination.

At Talley, we can help steer you in the right direction for education, engineering, product and logistics to achieve a successful WiMAX solution. Call your local Talley sales representative to get more information on both licensed and unlicensed solutions for your network. We can help you “Clear the Air”.
