The Need for Coax RF Protection
Cell towers, wireless communications, radio, microwave repeaters, and VHF communications towers are all susceptible to lightning strikes. Although lightning is a dc pulse, the rise time to peak current can be very fast and damage to valuable communications equipment often results in costly downtime.
When lightning energy traverses a coaxial cable there is a high
frequency roll-off and a slight
propagation delay that occurs due to the unbalanced inductances of the shield and the center conductor and the center conductor’s capacitive relationship through the dielectric to the shield. The higher frequency shield energy will arrive at the equipment first, followed by the center conductor energy spread out over time.
Since the pulse energy arrives at different times, a differential voltage occurs that must be equalized and prevented from reaching the equipment. The amount of energy reaching the equipment through the coaxial protector is known as “Throughput Energy.”
DC Block, DC Pass, Ultra low PIM RF protectors and grounding
products are engineered and manufactured by PolyPhaser to support surge protection communication requirements from the
tower top to the central office.
Our ability to provide consistent quality and compliance with IS09001 and Mil Certifications has made PolyPhaser an industry leader.

DMR Test Capability in Handheld Analyzers Offered by Anritsu Company
Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) has been designed from the ground up for users of professional mobile radio. The incorporation of a two-slot TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) protocol results in DMR providing many advantages, including simple and effective
scalability, energy efficiency, cost efficiency and a rich new set of features. DMR also has
inherent benefits associated with digital radio communications, such as extended range
and audio clarity.
Field engineers and technicians deploying and installing DMR networks are responsible for conducting a new series of tests based on a defined standard. A test solution that addresses the measurement
requirements of DMR, while also
meeting other standards-based field tests
that must be made, can help field technicians
and engineers perform their jobs
more efficiently and effectively. The LMR
Master S412E is the first instrument in its category to test emerging narrowband signals, such as DMR, as well as broadband digital
public safety systems.
The introduction of two options by Anritsu Company specifically meets the DMR test needs
of field engineers and technicians. Designed for the industry leading LMR Master™ S412E,
the options allow users to conduct analysis of digital modulation transmissions, generate
modulated signals for receiver testing, and perform coverage mapping on DMR radio networks.
This includes MotoTRBO™ systems with a single, lightweight, durable test solution.
These tests are in compliance with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute
(ETSI) DMR Tier 2 protocol.
The modulation analyzer option enables the LMR Master S412E to conduct highly accurate
measurements on the transmission characteristics of DMR networks. The option also
generates DMR patterns using the vector signal generator built into the LMR Master S412E.
Additional options allow generating data-modulated signals in other formats, including P25
and NXDN. By coupling the signal generator to a suitable amplifier and antenna, talk-in
coverage analysis can also be done.
Performing DMR coverage measurements are simple and straightforward with the option installed on
the LMR Master S412E. The user simply connects a receive antenna and a GPS antenna to the handheld
analyzer. The instrument automatically stores results for RSSI, BER and Modulation Fidelity (aka “Error Vector Magnitude”) which are tagged with the measurement’s GPS location. Mapping data sets
are automatically saved, and can be later recalled and viewed on the LMR Master S412E or exported
for viewing as CSV tables or as industry-standard KML files for display in geo-visualization tools such
as Google Earth™.
The LMR Master S412E significantly reduces the number of tools field technicians and engineers need,
thereby saving time and money while ensuring accuracy. It is the only battery-powered DMR test solution
to provide cable and transmission measurements, a high-performance spectrum and interference
analyzer, and EVM and BER measurements at -115 dBm signal levels of P25/NXDN/DMR systems. Unlike
other portable solutions, the LMR Master S412E offers the most extensive digital LMR test capability,
including analysis of uplink and downlink control channel traffic and BER/EVM coverage mapping.
Utilizing the field-proven, compact, rugged design of the Anritsu Site Master™, the LMR Master S412E

Precision 7-16 DIN Adapters with Stainless Steel Coupling
Nuts Preferred for Harsh Environments and High Torque
Applications
Testing for passive intermodulation (PIM) of wireless base station sites generally includes the use of 7-16 DIN adapters. To assure accurate measurements, the adapters should be attached and tightened
using a torque wrench. Traditional 7-16 DIN adapters are constructed of Silver plated machined brass
bodies. Although they can be used for PIM testing, after multiple uses the interfaces will wear and the
plating will begin to flake off and the accuracy of the testing may be in jeopardy.
RF Industries has introduced a line of rugged 7-16 DIN adapters
under the RF Precision Products brand featuring White Bronze
(tri-metal) plating that leaves the interface free of metal
particles, ensuring the best results. White Bronze tri-metal
plated bodies offer tarnish free service, superior electrical
performance and low PIM. White Bronze plating also offers
a non-magnetic solution while retaining high conductivity in
the conductor paths. These low loss, low VSWR, “rugged” adapters are designed to be used with portable antenna and cable
analyzers. Anritsu’s Site MasterTM, Summitek’s SITM series and
Boonton’s PIM testers are examples where high grade DIN adapters
are used. An additional feature is Stainless Steel coupling nuts
with large hex flats for easy mating and un-mating. Engineered for
long life in field
applications, they are also suitable for lab environments.
